Disc Golf: A Sport Destined For The Spotlight

OK... OK... I know... a shameless plug for Emerald Isle Disc Golf in North San Diego county and the increasingly beloved sport being discovered by many each year. Where's ESPN?

Hi... this is Gary the "oldest brother" of Skip, Emerald Isles Disc Golf Tournament Director. It was an honor to do a photo shoot at the September 24, 2006 "Emerald Isle Monthly" (EIM). I look forward to doing it again.

Club House Action

Lunch Between Rounds

Camera dude shows up for Round 2 play... and a good cheeseburger...

It was great to meet some of you. If I could toss my cane I'd be out there with you. Since my injury, I had to give up many things. Two on top of the list... my ER medical career and my hacker golf game. At one time, I enjoyed golfing 3 days a week. Skip and I have been known to play a 27 hole course then run over to an 18 holer to usher in the sunset. I miss it.

I only fell once. Spending an hour with you all was good physical, mental and spiritual therapy... Thanks. Enough about me... look at some of you.... amazing grace and power...

If you have not tossed at Emerald Isle, I think many Pro/Am players would recommend a trial. Because of the 9-24-06 challenge of a sporadic blustery wind and swirling tree shadows, I was amazed at the precision accomplished. You were truly "Dancing With Trees" in Oceanside.
Pre-Gallery Samples
There was some "stylin' " action based on my novice eye...
I hope my camera was not too noisy and there were no Tiger Woods type glares at the clicker... and I hope you like the pics on my little blog site.
There are many in the 200 photos that are good. I look forward to posting many more in a gallery that will be set up soon so you can zoom in. Let me know what you think.
Congrats to the winners of each division.

Well done.

Illinois Disc Golf Championship

Land of Lincoln Seeks Best Throwers
The tournament is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday. The course has been groomed and the players are feeling the nerves... that game day butterflies.

If you are in the area... have not watched this sport or are considering the addiction of Frisbee... that is... disc golf... Now is your chance to check it out.

I found the following article of interest.

Best to all in search of being proclaimed 2006 Illinois Champion Disc Golfer.

MOKENA — For the second straight year, Mokena is hosting the Illinois state disc golf championship.Organizers hope next weekend's event will draw more than 100 professional and amateur players to The Oaks, a 27-hole disc golf course that the Mokena Park District opened in 2003.

"This is a big tournament, it's a very challenging course and it really attracts the very cream of the crop," said Gary Lewis, of Joliet, the event's organizer and a 2002 inductee into the Disc Golf Hall of Fame.

"We'll literally have the strongest throwers — guys who can fling it 500 feet."

The game is a mixture of golf and basketball. Players sling Frisbees from a tee box and complete each hole by tossing the disc into a hanging metal basket. Enthusiasts say disc golf is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. A few Southland park districts have created courses in recent years.

Disc Golf From Rome

... Rome Georgia, that is. I found this great story reported of an ongoing PDGA tournament.

The frisbee of old is becoming a world renowned sport... truly a walk in the park. However, winning respectable monetary prizes requires dedication and skill.

Many call the sport "frisbee golf" but to the professional, it is disc golf.

Disc Golf Craze sends the best to all the participants... article and photo below.

Ridge Ferry Park turned into a golf course for 56 individuals from four states — including Georgia — Saturday. However, the first Ridge Ferry Open was not your average game of golf, being part of a two-day Professional Disc Golf Association “C” tier event.

Players played with sets of flying discs instead of clubs.“You’ve got different shaped and weighted disks that would be equivalent to your irons, drivers and putters,” said Brett Porter as his group, including Luke Outler and Jeff Gomez, neared the 16 “pole hole.”

“You’ve got discs for distance and ones that will turn left or right. You just have to pick which one you think will do best for the situation.”

The rules are similar to golf, said John Nisewonder, who helped keep score. “You’ve got a par for every hole, and whoever throws the farthest gets to throw first the next time.”

The group played 18 holes in the morning, and after a break for lunch they played the second round.Players are grouped in categories according to level of expertise, for example pro, advanced and intermediate, for different prizes including gear for the amateur categories and cash for pros.

“The purse for this event will be around $1,000,” said Nisewonder. “It ranges depending on how many players are put in that category. Typically, you can win about $300 for a small ‘C’ event like this one, and as much as $10,000 dollars for a larger ‘A’ level event.”

Melisa Chappell takes her best shot on the ninth hole Saturday afternoon at the new Emerson Park Disc Golf Course. The course is now open, but will celebrate its grand opening July 8.

Forget about losing golf balls, buying golf clubs or paying green fees.Cayuga County's first disc golf course is open at Emerson Park, providing a venue to play the game of golf free, but with a disc.

What began in California in 1973 as a game of golf played with a Frisbee disc instead of clubs and balls, has grown to a game played by 3 to 5 million people worldwide, according to the Professional Disc Golf Association.

Emerson Park's nine-hole disc golf course opened in early June. Gary Duckett, parks and trails director for Cayuga County, said that between 50 and 100 people are playing the course a week, depending on weather. No admission fee is charged to play the course, open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“The number of people is constantly increasing and we haven't had our grand opening yet,” Duckett said. “Disc golf provides the same challenge of getting a low score in a beautiful atmosphere, but is a lot cheaper.”The disc golf association designed the nine-hole course for Emerson Park.

Disc golf course open at Sheldon Park

"The Humbolt Independent"

How often it is said, "one person can't change anything." It is often used as an excuse to abdicate responsibility for situations in one's community, at times, even one's own family. Complacency becomes acceptable, and as a result, families disintegrate and communities stagnate.Humboldt, as a community, has resisted such complacency, continually endeavoring to keep the town fresh, attractive, and inviting to all residents, with a special focus on the needs of families. The completion of a beautiful main street, as well as the popular new Aquatic Center, are examples of such efforts.

The recently constructed Disc Golf Course, located at Joe Sheldon Park, not only enhances the atmosphere of family and recreation that Humboldt offers, but illustrates what can be accomplished by just a few individuals who possessed both vision and ambition.

Mountain Disc Golf

Ultimate Challenge in the Ozarks of Missouri

The Ozark Mountain Disc Golf Course is located in the foothills of Vichy, MO. This 300 acre farm is one of the most beautiful pieces of property ever used for disc golf. Dave McCormack has transformed this property into the most challenging, yet fair disc golf course in the area.

This is further confirmed by having the highest World Class Par as published by the Professional Disc Golf Association. The Ozarks is a 10,000' par 70 that has creeks and ponds, huge elevation changes, open and tight shots, and long and short holes. You better bring your best game.

***OR***
Solitude Mountain Resort In Utah

Solitude is the home of Utah's finest high altitude mountainside disc golf course. This 18-hole course has baskets that are between 300' and 500' in length. All holes are par 3 with a total course distance of 7,750'. The first hole is 9000 feet above sea level, so they really mean high altitude. The course is free if you choose to hike in. You may want to utilize the Sunrise lift to get to the first hole. The lift is available Thursday through Sunday.

Get in shape you coastal dwellers. This is no walk in the park or on the beach.
